Tipping Point is a powerful new work by internationally renowned artist Luke Jerram.
Showcased by Fermynwoods Contemporary Art in the largest ancient urban woodland in the UK, at the heart of Corby town centre, Northamptonshire, Tipping Point uses immersive light, smoke, and sound to simulate the drama of a forest fire.
The installation features a bespoke soundtrack created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones, which includes the sounds of burning trees, whirring chainsaws, and fleeing animals, alongside ambient, melancholic music and moving global testimonies from individuals who have experienced wildfires.
As part of the project, visitors had the opportunity to find information about local environmental action, including North Northants Council’s work on increasing tree canopy cover and habitat preservation. Click here for more environmental actions you can take.
Fermynwoods Director, James Steventon added, “As climate fires rage around the world, we are excited to bring this powerful artwork to the county, thinking globally as we act locally to change the perception of Corby from a toxic town of environmental harm to an environmental leader.”
Tipping Point by Luke Jerram, in collaboration with composers Dan Jones and Simon Birch, was originally commissioned by University of Bristol Botanic Garden and the charity Make My Money Matter.
Luke Jerram’s multidisciplinary arts practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live artworks. Living in the UK, but working internationally, Jerram creates art projects which excite and inspire people around the world.
Dan Jones is a multi award-winning composer and sound designer working in film, television and theatre. He has won three Ivor Novello awards in the film and television categories, including a remarkable double nomination in 2018, as well as a BAFTA, and has carved a significant career as a composer and sound designer for large-scale public events.
Tipping Point is commissioned alongside Luke Jerram’s Gaia, a breathtaking seven-metre installation of planet Earth, suspended high above the auditorium in The Core at Corby Cube; plus, What’s Eating Our Reality, an intimate, immersive three-course meal by artist Maya Chowdhry that uses digital projection mapping to explore the journey our food takes from seed to table.
Tipping Point is funded by Northants Community Foundation’s Northamptonshire Creative Climate Action Fund and 100Green, the UK’s only 100% Green Gas and Electricity Supplier. Supported by North Northants Council. Presented in collaboration with The Core at Corby Cube as part of the venue’s 15th birthday celebrations, which also includes a family arts festival by Made With Many on 20th September.
